Questions to ask before you take topsoil

• Is it screened? Unscreened soil may contain rocks, roots, and clods.
• Where did it come from? Soil from farm ground, a building lot, or a roadway can differ a lot.
• Any weeds or debris? Ask about weed seed, trash, or other material mixed in.
• What's it for? Gardens and lawns may need different soil than general grading. If it matters, consider a soil test.
